SISI Trichur (Kerala)

Introduction

The jurisdiction of the SISI covers all the districts of Kerala and the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. It provides technical, managerial consultancy services besides attending to revival of small scale sick units. SISI, Trichur undertakes promotional and developmental activities starting from creation of awareness, motivation, identification of products and entrepreneurs to setting up of industrial establishments and follow-up measures in the context of new era of liberalisaion and globalisation through its Extension Centres at Allapuzha, Shoranur, Kozhikode, Footwear Service Centre and Central Workshop situated at the Headquarters --Trichur. The Nucleus Cell of the Institute is also functioning at Cochin for the promotion and development of small scale units in Lakshadweep Islands. Fruit and Vegetable Preservation Training Centre imparts training to the prospective entrepreneurs and also aims at upgrading the skill of the entrepreneurs in this line.

Workshop Facilities/testing Jobs Conducted/Revenue Earned

The workshop/laboratories attached to the institute and its extension Centres provide Common facility services and Training in Fruit Preservation, General Engineering, Machine shop, Tool room, Black smithy, Forging shop, Arc and Gas welding, footwear and leather goods, wood seasoning and furniture design etc. The common facility workshops, during 1998-99, undertook jobs and earned revenue.

The Institute prepared the following technical literature during the year 92-93.

1. A status report on Electrical Industries and also a directory of testing facilities.

2. A directory of FPO licenced food products besides a report of quality control & upgradation on fruits and vegetable preservation, a model project report, State Profile and Agro Food Processing industries.

3. A study report on policy control, a report on Quality Control and Upgradation--Energy Audit Report.

4. A directory of tyre retreading machinery manufacturers.

5. A state industrial profile of Kerala.

6. Industrial potentially surveys for UT of Lakshadweep, Kollam & Kottayam Distts. Consultancy Services During the year 1998-99, existing as well as prospective entrepreneurs were provided consultancy in technical, managerial, economic and other disciplines.

Training & Seminars

SISI earned a revenue of Rs 6,21,068/- through various consultancy services, fee from EDPs/ MDP traineed and by sale of priced publications etc. (i) The Institute conducted 15 EDPs and trained 448 entrepreneurs.
(ii) 13 MDP training programmes were conducted and 276 people were trained
(iii) Three EDP motivational campaigns were conducted in 1998-99 and 258 prospective entrepreneurs undertook part in these programmes.

Ancillary Development/Marketing Exports

i) 56 trade enquiries from various overseas Buyers are received during 1997-98 through the promotion councils were transmitted to export worthy units situated in Kerala. The items of such enquiries were for ready-made garments, spices, agriculture implements, surgical instruments, food products, cashewnuts, marine products, handicrafts etc.

ii) Tender bulletins received from DGS & D were processed and the same were disseminated to the units registered with sub-contract exchange.

iii) In the year, one Vendor Development Programme was organised.

iv) Fifty units were registered under KSX.

Economic Investigation & Statistical Services

E.I. Division of the Institute conducted 3 Industrial Potentiality Surveys of Alleppey, Wynad and Ernakulam districts. Reports were prepared. A State Profile of Kerala was also prepared during 1998-99. Market information on various items (both old and new) stipulated for the preparation of project profiles numbering 52 was provided the technical divisions.

Assistance to DICs industrial profile of Kerala.

Officers of this Institute continued to attend Task Force Committee Meetings held at the district and tluka headquarters in almost all districts from where communications were received. They also kept a close liaison with the officials of D.I.G.s in preparation of thrust areas of the districts, Trade Industry Growth and helped in mitigating the common problems manifested among the various industrial groups. They also coordinated with the D.I.C. officials in preparing Capacity Assessment Reports, In-plant Study Reports, Revival reports, Motivation Seminars and other programmes organised by D.I.Cs and other agencies from time to time. A list containing the thrust area (proposed) for each district was identified and sent to respective D.I.Cs for their consideration.

Assistance to SC/ST/Women/Weaker Sections

SISI continued to extend all assistance to SC/ST/Women entrepreneurs by identifying, motivating, training and guiding them in setting up them in setting up SSI units. During the year 97-98, 89 women entrepreneurs, 10 SC/ST candidates were trained by this Institute.

Energy Conservation Programme

Under Energy Conservation Programme, discussions were held with Director of Energy Managment Centre, Trivandrum in connection with 'Total Energy Conservation Studies of the Small and Medium Scale Industries in the State' as well as intensive study of roofing tile industries for identifying energy conservation potential and evolving appropriate strategy. Consequently, an experiment project is being implemented in one of the tile units to assess the potential of energy conservation by incorporating instrumentation in half manu type kilns.
