Introduction

Small Industries Service Institute Mumbai alongwith its Branch Institute at Aurangabad looks after the promotion and development of small scale industries of 30 districts/areas of Maharashtra State. The backward districts declared by Central Govt. are Ratnagiri and Aurangabad, Dhule, Jalgaon, Parbhani, Nanded, Osmanabad, Raigad and Beed.

The main objective of the Institute is to provide technical and consultancy services to small scale industry. Providing promotion and extension services to small scale/ancillary and tiny units. Besides this, training, library, exhibition and economic information, workshop facilities are also provided.

Workshop Facilities, Testing Jobs Conducted/Revenue Earned

The Institute provides common facility services to small scale units, undertakes development job work of jigs and fixtures, manufacturing of press tools, cutting dies, framing dies, plastic moulding dies, development of small machineries, etc.

The Workshops attached to SISI, Bombay and its Branch Institute, Aurangabad provided common facility services in machine shop. During the year 1998-99, 330 jobs were undertaken by the workshop and 294 units were benefited. The total revenue earned during the year amounted to Rs.3,28,822/-.

Technical Schemes/Blue Prints, Drawing, Technical Publications, etc. Prepared and Supplied

The technical officers of SISI, Mumbai and Branch SISI Aurangabad prepared in all about 43 project profiles in view of the enhancement of SSI investment limit in plant and machinery from 60 lakhs to 3 crores. The mechanical division of this Institute has also prepared a suitable project report on dashboard instruments. Other reports prepared by this Institute are:

a) Detailed project profile on agro based food products.

b) Two reports on quality control and upgradatoin

i) on value manufacturing foundry

ii) On engineering workshops

c) Industrial Design Section has prepared 4 graphic design and 2 prototype product design.

d) Prototype design for 2-way comuter table and hospital signage was also prepared.

Training and Seminars

Technical Training: In General Machine Shop and Blue Print Reading 103 persons were trained from the Workshops of SISI Mumbai and Branch SISI Aurangabad during 1997-98.

Management Development Programme: During 1997-98, this Institute conducted 9 Management Development Programmes in the field of industrial, financial marketing and export management. In all 312 entrepreneurs were trained out of which 28 were women and 34 belonged to SC/ST category.

Entrepreneurial Development Programme (EDP): During the year 1997-98 the IMT Division conducted 4 EDP Campaigns against the target of 3. During these programmes about 740 persons were provided guidance. out of the 4 EDP Campaigns, two programmes were exclusively for women.
In addition the Food and Leather Division of this Institute also conducted one product cum process EDP in food and leather products respectively for women in association with Lions Club of Amalner.

Further a Motivation Programme on Bakery Industry was organised in association with National Associations of Bakery Industries at Mumbai. About 100 persons attended the programme.

Seminars

i) A Seminar on Ancillary & Vendor Development was organised at the Institute on 11.2.98. The programme was organised by SISI in association with National Small Industries Corporation Ltd and Bombay Small Entrepreneurs Association.

ii) A joint meeting cum seminar on 'Environment Upgradation and Energy Efficient Technology' for industrialists of Pune, Nasik, Kolhapur and Aurangabad districts was held at Pune.

Modernisation

Under Modernisation & Technology Upgradation this Institute took up work in the fields of Quality Control and Upgradation, Energy Conservation and Pollution Control. In quality control and upgradation, the details are:

1) 5 day training programme on ISO-9000 and TQM was conducted at Nasik in association with Nasik Industries Manufacturer' Association and joint Director of Industries. No of participants was 27.

2) An Awareness Programme on ISO 9000 was organised in association with Bureau of Indian Standards New Delhi and Industries Association of Aurangabad. About 105 industrialists/ entrepreneurs participated.

3) In addition, the Institute also identified and recommended SSI units for partipation in The National Award to SSIs for Quality Products.

Ancillary Development

For the development of the Ancillary Industry in Maharashtra, this Institute undertook a number of activities during the year 1997-98. The details are as given below:

a) 150 SSIs were registered under Sub-contracting Exchange Registration at this Institute.

b) Project profiles of 3 products suitable in the ancillary sector were prepared.

c) A directory of ancillary units in the State was prepared.d) Plant Level Committee (PLC) meeting of 10 industries were attended.

d) 16 large scale units were visited for ancillary development work.
A Vendor Development Programme was organised by this Institute at Mumbai. 150 participants participated and took benefit of the same.


Exports

a) A 3 day training programme in 'Packaging for Export' was organised by this Institute in association with Indian Institute of Packaging. 51 entrepreneurs participated in the programme.

b) A training programme on Export Management was conducted by this Institute in association with All India Manufacturers Organisation, Mumbai. 35 entrepreneurs participated in the programme.

c) Exhibits of small scale industries were sent to the International Trade Fair held at Johannesburg, Hanoi, Myanmar, Damascus, Moscow, Mexico, Acma (Frankfurt).

d) A Directory of Exportworthy SSI Units in Mumbai was also prepared by the EP Division.

Marketing - Govt. Purchase Programme

During the year 1997-98, 97 small scale units were recommended to NSIC for registration for participation in Govt. Store Purchase Programme.The Institute earned Rs 1,41,900 through activities.

Economic Investigation & Statistical Services

During 1997-98, the Institute conducted 2 district Industrial potential surveys of Satara and Dhula. Besides, a state profile of Maharashtra has been prepared.

For compilation of production index of small scale industries, units selected on 2% sample basis and information in respect of 18 reserved items was collected and reports were sent to DS (SSI) New Delhi.

Assistance to DICs Liaison with State Govt.

The Institute and its Branch at Aurangabad maintained close liaison with the Directorate of Industries, the DIC and other organisations like MSFC< SICOM Ltd, MIDC. MSSIDC, MCED, MITCON, MIDCOM and others. During the year under report the officers of the Institute visited the DICs and other officers regularly for close follow up and coordination regarding the implementation of PMRY scheme in the state conducting training programmes etc.

Director of this Institute also attended the Governing Council meeting of Maharashtra Centre for Entrepreneurship Development of which he is a member.

This Institute also maintained close contact with MIDC regarding implementation of IID project being set up at Yavatmal. Further assistance was also provided to LIDCOM for the Central Footwear Training Centre (CFTC) being set up at Ambarnath, Thane Dist.

The State Lever Inter Institutional Committee meeting organised by RBI was also attended.

Technical support provided by this Institute to the Directorate of Industries for fixing up of norms for issue for electrical/ electronic products purchase under their purchase programme.

Assistance to SC/ST/Women/Weaker Sections Entrepreneurs

The Institute continued to extend priority to SC/ST/Women and weaker section in the matter of training courses conducted by it. The participants were trained in identification of products having scope for manufacture, preparation of project reports, Management and Financial aspects, etc. During the year, the number of SC/ST/Women and minorities trained in different courses conducted by this Institute are furnished below :-

Energy Conservation 1.An 'Oil Consumer Conservation Meet' was organised by this Institute at Mahad, Raigad district. This programme was organised in association with Petrol Conservation and Research Association (PCRA) Mumbai and Mahad Manufacturers' Association. During this programme the industrialists (55 nos) were provided information on role of SIDO in energy conservation/ energy audit and on PCRA scheme.

Pollution Control

This Institute conducted an Awareness Programme on 'Waste Minisation and Cleaner Production in Forging, Die Casting and Foundry Industries' at Shiroli, Kohapur. The programme was organised in association with PCRA and Shiroli Manufacturers' Association.

Other Activities

Modernisation of Library: During the year purchases of books, subscriptions to new Trade Jouenals and furniture were made for the Library.

Modernisation of Workshop: Action was initiated and orders placed for purchase of new machines for the SISI, Mumbai Workshop.

SENET: Action was taken for setting up of the SENET at SIST, Mumbai - 3 computers have been installed and officials have been imparted training for this.

Advance Licence: The officers of this Institute regularly attended the Regional Advance Licence Committee (RALC) meeting organised by the Jt Director General Foreign Trade, Mumbai and scrutinised and provided comments on the cases referred for issue of Advance Licence. During the year 1997-98 about 1066 cases were scrutinised.

Foreign Trade Delegation: Delegates from the countries of Iran, Iraq & Russia visited this Institute, during which a meeting between the delegates and successful EDP trainees was organised at the Institute.
