Introduction


Small Industries Service Institute, Ludhiana renders technical and managerial consultancy services to the entrepreneurs in the State of Punjab and U.T. of Chandigarh, besides, the Institute keeps a close liaison with the State Directorate of Industries, District Industries Centres and other State/Central Level Agencies responsible for development of Small Scale Industries. The Institute also provides common facility services and testing facilities through its common facility workshop and Chemical Laboratory.

Workshop Facilities/Testing Jobs Conducted and Revenue Earned

Small Industries Service Institute, Ludhiana undertook 457 jobs for the benefit of 332 units in its common Facility Workshop and Chemical Testing Laboratory during the year 1998-99. The Institute earned a revenue of Rs. 4,58,062 during the year by providing common facility workshop services and by undertaking chemical testing jobs. During 1991-92, SISI had undertaken 428 jobs, benefiting 350 Units and a revenue worth Rs. 2.58 lakhs was earned.

Consultancy Services Provided

The Consultancy services provided by the Institute under various heads during the year 1996-97 is given below:

Training & Seminars

The Institute organised two six months Skill Development Programmes during the year 1997-98 in which a total number of 20 candidates were trained. Besides, the Institute conducted E.D.P. courses in Hosiery Trade, Leather Trade and a General EDP courses for the benefit of Educated Unemployed Youth. A total of 289 candidates were trained in these courses. The Institute also organised four Management Development Courses for the benefit of existing as well as prospective entrepreneurs of the State. Various courses devised to suit the needs of the participants, in which 56 particpants took part, were conducted at various places in the State. Apart from these courses three motivational programmes were conducted at Ropar and Ludhiana. 237 prospective entrepreneurs took part in these campaigns.

Modernisation and Technology Upgradation

The Institute organised a Workshop on Technology Upgradation & Quality Assurance of Machine Tools Industry. The main objective of the programme was to bring home the development in manufacturing techniques including numerical controls for the machine tools, to the small scale machine tools manufacturer.

Ancillary Development & Sub-Contract Exchange

1. Awareness Programme & Exhibition on Indigenisation of Spares/ Components required by Indian Air Force: On the request of 3-BRD, Indian Air Force, Chandigarh, SISI Ludhiana, after identification of various parts and components required by them for repairs and maintenance of the Aircraft, organised two days programme at Ludhiana.

2. Vendor Development Programme cum Exhibition for NFL, PNFC & PACL, Naya Nangal: The one day programme was organised in close coordination with National Fertilisers Limited, Naya Nangal.

3. Sub-Contract Exchange: The sub-contract exchange established in the institute assisted and guided various small scale units in identifying large and medium units for becoming their vendors and vice-versa. During the year, 40 new units were registered with the Exchange, 162 SSI units were introduced to various large and medium units as vendors, 67 enquiries were processed and forwarded to various SSI units.

Export

The Institute conducted a training programme on packaging for exports in collaboration with Indian Institute of Packaging, New Delhi and Engineering Export Promotion Council, Jalandhar. In all 23 small scale units participated in the programme.

Economic Investigation/Statistical Information

The Institute conducted 2 Industrial Potential Surveys for the districts of Jalandhar and Ferozepur. The survey reports in respect of all these district were also prepared. The Institute updated State Industrial Profile of Punjab for the year 1997-98 by including the latest information available from various sources.

Assistance to DICs

The Institute worked in close liaison with the State Directorate of Industries and different District Industries Centres for the developmental programmes like EDP, Capacity Assessment, Ancillary Development, Export Promotion etc.

Awareness cum Motivational Training Programmes on ISO 9000/ TQM

i)One day awareness cum motivational training programmes on ISO 9000/ Total Quality Management were organised by the Institute at Phagwara and Mohali. The programme at Phagwara was organised in collaboration with the Punjab Chamber of Exporters, Phagwara at Hotel Hayer Palace Industrial Area, Phagwara in which 21 participants apart from the faculty members, officials and other delegates took part. The programme at Mohali (District Ropar) was organised in collaboration with Mohali Industries Association. Twenty participants represented different small scale units at the programme.

Pollution Control

- A one-day workshop on phasing out Ozone Depleting Substances was organised by the Institute. Fifty participants took part in the workshop.
- An awareness programme on pollution abatement in Dyeing industry was organised by the Institute in collaboration with Punjab Pollution Control Board, Ludhiana and Ludhiana Dyeing Industries Association. Forty participants took part in the programme.
- An awareness programme on Waste Minimisation and Cleaner Production  in Electroplating Industry was organised by the Institute. Forty participants attended the programme.

Other Significant Work

i) Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana: The Institute being the member of the Task Force Committee constituted by the Government at different DICs in the State of Punjab & UT Chandigarh, officers assisted the Task Force Committees in identifying beneficiaries for the Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana by attending meetings.

ii) The senior officers of the Institute attended quarterly meetings of SLIIC being convened by the Reserve Bank of India, Chandigarh.
