SISI Guwahati (Assam)

Introduction

The Small Industries Service Institute, Guwahati is looking after the development of small scale industries in the three States, viz. Assam, Meghalaya & Arunachal Pradesh, located in the North eastern region. There are at present, six branches under this Institute covering 40 districts in all these States.

Workshop Facilities/Testing Job Conducted/Revenue Earned

The workshop facilities like Turning, Drilling, Grinding, Shaping, Welding, heat treatment are available with SISI, Guwahati and Br. SISI, Silchar for rendering job services.

Under testing, the facilities for industries on metallurgical, chemical & glass & ceramics are available.

Under common facilities services and testing facilities a total of 491 jobs were undertaken in 1998-99 and in which 310 SSI units were benefitted.

Total revenue earned during the year stood at Rs. 153,219/-

Blue Prints/Drawing Technical publications etc. prepared and supplied

205 maps/ charts/ sketches were prepared by the Institute. 25 technical publications/ reports were brought out by the Institute.

Training & Seminars

I. Training


i) Technical Training

The SISI Guwahati conducted skill development courses of six months duration for developing skills of semi skilled and unskilled workers of SSI units and entrepreneurs who are willing to set up mechanical industries. At present the Institute is providing such training in the trades of (1) Machineshop Practice and (2) Welding. Similar facilities are also available at our Branch SISI Silchar workshop.

Two courses of training were conducted in these trades at SISI Guwahati in which 25 candidates were trained and Rs 12,000/- earned as revenue.

ii) Entrepreneurship Development Training Programme

a) Motivational Campaign: During the year, SISI Guwahati and its branches conducted 7 nos of Motivational Campaigns in different places under its jurisdiction. Total 587 persons were trained out of this, 36 SC, 205 ST, 178 women and 168 others.

b) Management Development Courses: During the year 1997-98, 4 nos IMT courses were organised and 86 persons were trained. The name of course and locations are given below:

II. Seminars

1. A seminar on Awareness Programme was organised by SISI, Guwahati in its office premises on ISO9000 and TQM.

2. A seminar on Awareness Programme on Waste Minimisation on Cleaner Technology in Small Scale Industry was organised by SISI Guwahati.

3. A seminar on Energy Conservation Programme in collaboration with PCRA at SISI, Guwahati was organised during the period under review.

4. During the year under review, SISI, Guwahati with its officers of Ancillary Development organised 6 nos of Ancillary Development Seminars.

III. Modernisation Programme

During the year a report was prepared on Quality Control and Upgradation. This report is related to foundry industries. A Plant Guide on Asbestos Cement Concrete Pipes and Fittings and a status report on lime industry of Barak Valley and North Cachar Hills districts of Assam were also prepared during the year under review.

Ancillary Development Programme

Under this programme this Institute organised the following programmes

2. Ancillary Development Seminar - 6

3. Vendor Development Programme - 6

4. Total Nos. of Ancillary Units established - 23

5. Project Profiles on Ancillary Items- 5

Under the Assam Sub-Contract Exchange Programme, the following activities were completed during 1997-98 by the Institute:

No of small scale units assisted by SCXs - 15

Marketing

SISI Guwahati continued to provide marketing assistance to SSI units during the year 1997-98. A total of 328 units were registered under Sub-Contract Exchange. During the year under review 6 Buyers-Sellers meet cum Exhibitions were organised. During this reporting year, 52 Nos of project profiles were prepared. This year 5 nos Feasibility Assessment Reports were also prepared and earned a revenue of Rs 6329/-

Economic Investigation/Statistical Services

The Institute prepared three State profiles in respect of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, and Industrial Potentiality surveys of 5 districts - Papumpara, East Kameng, Tinsukhia, Kamrup and Goalpara.


Assistance to Sick Units

A special study on the sickness of SSI units located at Industrial Estates at Bamunimaidan, Rani, Bonda, Badarpur and Jorhat were conducted by this Institute. As desired by the State Government, study of sick industrial units were taken up and the study is in progress unit-wise.

PI (Production Index) Work

The P.I work is a continuous nature of work. Quarterly Production Returns for 2% production index of Industrial Production of selected SSI units have been sent to the H.Q office.

Assistance to DICs

The SISI Guwahati and its branches are working in close collaboration with all DIC's in the three States. Necessary back up support have been provided to DIC's throughout the year. The EDP's and motivational campaigns, EDP for PMRY beneficiaries, were organised in association with DICs.

Assistance to SC/ST/Women/Weaker Sections Entrepreneurs

The SISI, Guwahati and its branches continued to provide all types of assistance to SC/ST/Women/Weaker section entrepreneurs on priority basis.

The list of SC/ST/Women and Weaker section entrepreneurs trained by SISI Guwahati out of the total 1327 entrepreneurs trained during the year are as follows:

Scheduled Caste - 83 nos

Scheduled Tribes - 336 nos

Women - 488 nos

Total - 907

Other activities

a) During the year under review capacity of total 11 nos small scale units were assessed and earned a revenue of Rs 16,500/-

b) Officers of Branch Institute and SISI Guwahati prepared 200 nos of project profiles for the PMRY beneficiaries on different subject and also as per requirements of entrepreneurs.
